Description
A canoe is beached on the shore near a shelter of large rocks. Red October trees mark fall, and the end of the canoeing season. Grand Kakalin, on Fox River, now Kaukauna, WI, the stopping place of the fish, Voyageur’s portage, alive with life, beautiful in all seasons, especially poignant in fall, with thoughts of vibrant plenty quickly fading into winter snows. Indians and Voyageurs portaged here, at Grand Kakalin, “Ogaq-kane,” the place of the pike, or “O-Gau-Gau-Ning,” stopping place of the pickerel, in the Menominee language. Jesuit Fr. Claude Allouez wrote: “On the 18th day of April, 1670, we made a portage which they call Kakalin. Our sailors drew the canoe through the rapids; I walked on the banks of the river where I found apple trees and vine stalks in abundance.” The image is enhanced with filters to simulate a pencil drawing.

Lovely work!

Thank you, Marcia -- it's one of my favorites, too! The actual scene is from the very historic rapids on Fox River at Kaukauna, WI, the stopping place of the fish, and I'm sure that the Native Americans and French Voyageurs enjoyed the beauty of the place, perhaps having lunch there while they portaged their canoes around the rapids. I go there often, and several years ago saw nearly 100 bald eagles in the trees, waiting to grab a fish for lunch in the swirling waters below. HAVE A GREAT DAY!
